Did you know last year Americans spent over 1.4 billion dollars on over-the-counter teeth whiteners? Your Lake Orion dentist, Dr. Brad Greenfield, understands the importance of a beautiful smile. A bright smile free of stains can fill you with confidence. In fact, according to a recent Kelton Research study, brighter smiles make people appear more attractive and successful. But many people don’t realize that there are two different kinds of teeth stains. In today’s blog, Dr. Greenfield explains extrinsic and intrinsic teeth stains and how you can remove unsightly discoloration from your teeth.
Extrinsic Stains
Extrinsic stains appear on the surface of teeth. Common causes of extrinsic stains include the foods and drinks we consume. Coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and even age, can all result in tooth discoloration.
Teeth Whitening
At Lake Orion Family Dentistry, Dr. Greenfield offers convenient at-home and in-office teeth whitening treatments. In most cases, teeth whitening can remove extrinsic stains. Our in-office treatment uses a powerful bleaching gel and special light to erase stains in about an hour. Our at-home systems provide patients with a custom-made bleaching tray and gel. Simply wear the gel-filled tray for about an hour each day for around two weeks. You will notice dramatic results and a brighter smile.
Intrinsic Stains
Intrinsic stains result in discoloration of the dentin. The dentin is a sensitive layer of tooth structure just beneath the tooth enamel. Intrinsic stains can be caused by exposure to certain medications, such as tetracycline, or from injury, such as a cracked or chipped tooth. In most cases, regular teeth whitening can’t address intrinsic stains.
Porcelain Veneers
With cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Greenfield can brighten smiles discolored by intrinsic stains. Porcelain veneers provide instant whitening, as well as durable tooth repair. Thin shells of special dental porcelain are placed on the patient’s front teeth. Veneers blend seamlessly with your smile. Porcelain veneers are stain resistant and with proper care, can provide years of natural looking dental restoration.
