According to an estimate from the American Dental Association, 30% of Americans fail to make it to the dentist for regular check-ups. Dental phobia is common among Americans, and is a serious inhibitor for oral well-being. With the advent of sedation dentistry, many more patients are able to conquer dental phobia, and achieve the smile of their dreams. Dr. Brad Greenfield offers four types of sedation dentistry in his office, but here is a closer look at oral sedation.
What is Oral Sedation?
The use of oral sedatives in dentistry is an option for patients for whom nitrous oxide is not sufficient, or patients that do not want intravenous sedation. Halcyon or Valium is typically prescribed to patients undergoing oral sedation. The oral sedatives enable patients to relax, and in most cases, remain unaware of dental work being performed. Patients are still able to respond verbally to dentists, but the prescribed medication does an outstanding job of removing anxiety and fear.
At the end of a session, patients’ memory of the visit is generally foggy, at best. In many cases, extensive work can be performed on phobic patients. Previously unable to consider setting foot in a dental office, these patients can leave enjoying better oral health in fewer visits.
Can I Drive After Oral Sedation?
In cases where oral sedatives are used, patients are required to have someone drive them to and from the dental office. Patients are not allowed to operate a vehicle under the influence of sedation medication. The medication administered is powerful. Following an oral sedation session, rest is recommended for the remainder of the day.
